This guy is named Mat Kluruk; he lives in my village Blimbing and suffers from mental illness. I drew his portrait last year using pencil on paper. Today, I try to experiment with his portrait, applying both traditional and digital media. The traditional one, as I said, was done on paper with an 8B pencil and the digital one was in Photoshop CS3.

I use six layers to create this piece. Layer 1 is the drawing (background layer). And in the second layer, I work with colors, by simply stroking the image with soft round brush. This layer is set to Color. The third layer is highlight correction, which was done in Screen blending mode. In the fourth layer, I fix the shadow by working in Multiply mode and using semi hard round brush. This fifth layer is for coloring the background--I set this layer to Normal. And finally the last one, the sixth layer, is for the texture. I applied the newspaper texture in Multiply and did it only to certain areas, thanks to the masking feature in Photoshop.

If you're curious to see the comparison between the traditional and digital piece, here's the portrait for you.
